Hard Water in Peoria: Choosing Shower Surfaces That Can Take It

What does hard water actually do to a shower?

The U.S. Geological Survey defines hardness as the amount of dissolved calcium and magnesium in the water, and it names the two mechanisms that turn up in a bathroom. The first is soap scum: in hard water, soap reacts with the calcium to form the film that clouds glass, dulls tile and settles in the bottom of a door track. The second is scale. When hard water is heated, solid deposits of calcium carbonate can form, and the USGS notes that scale can reduce the life of equipment, raise the costs of heating the water, lower the efficiency of electric water heaters and clog pipes.

Both utilities are pointing at the same thing: softening is a household equipment decision with requirements of its own, and it does not have to come before a shower project. The routine that works in this water is short and dull, and it beats any product claim. Film forms where water evaporates, so the goal is to stop water from sitting.
